How Does Temporary Leave Work?

Temporary Leave (contract page 28) is earned at the rate of 1 day per 15 days in pay status.

You can think about your sick leave, personal business days, etc. as one of many "buckets" that are covered under the umbrella of Temporary Leave time. Below demonstrates the different types of time you can use, and generally how it can be used.

Be sure to read Contract Pages 28-30 for full details on how Temporary Leave can be used. See Pages 42-43 for attendance standards.

Personal Illness, Injury, Incapacitation: You can use the maximum amount of temporary leave time that you have accumulated.

Spouse, Child, Parent: You can use up to 14 days per year for the illness, injury or death of a spouse, child or parent. 8 of those days can be used for non-immediate family members/those living in your house.

Personal Business: Maximum of 3 days per fiscal year by employees with less than 20 years of employment with the district. Employees with 20 or more years of employment have a maximum of 4 days.

Parental Leave: Maximum of 5 days per year for the non-delivering parent (see Employee Handbook Page 28 for Maternity Leave Information)

Adoptive Leave: Maximum of 15 days per year.

Temporary Active Duty: Maximum of 14 days per year.

MOU’s (Memorandums of Understanding)

MOUs are mutually agreed upon between the District and SEIU Local 513. These are agreements that typically only last for one school year, and are subject to renewal.

MOUs are not a part of your contract.

FTE = Full Time Equivalent. FTE is calculated by taking your hours worked per week, divided by 40. Example: If you work 35 hour weeks, your FTE is 0.88.

During the 2023-2024 school year, a Para who is covering the classroom while the teacher is in the building but out of the classroom for more than 30 consecutive minutes will receive an additional $5/hour.

This is different from Para Supervision Classroom pay which occurs when the teacher is out of the building. That rate is also an additional $5/hour. Details are on page 12 of your 2022-2023 contract.

During the 2023-2024 school year, Paras who do not earn vacation time will have the pay they earned on non-teaching duty days moved to be paid out during winter break. This helps ensure that your paycheck during winter break isn't quite as small.

All Assistant and Benefited Paras for 2023-2024 are able to increase from their current FTE (Full Time Equivalent) to a FTE of 0.88, during the 2023-2024 school year.

A wide array of changes based on job position and FTE are in place for the 2023-2024 school year regarding lunch assignments.
